Sunset & Sunrise Yukon Style!
So the ride from Watson Lake to our next stop in Teslin, YT was lovely. We saw a black bear grazing on the side of the Alcan and that made my heart happy - it’s so cool being in the front row to Mother Nature! The weather was nice (even got to wear shorts) and the landscape was incredible. Seeing the snow covered mountains in the distance never gets old and the pic I’ve included below of the winding road is so typical of this road to Alaska!
Then we got to “The Yukon Motel & Restaurant” where we had a reservation at the campground. I must admit that I was doubting my hubby’s planning research but never should have because when we arrived there was, in fact, a motel and a restaurant AND (luckily) a campground - even though it wasn’t in the title of the place! Our campsite was great in that it was right in the front row to the lake, and the view was beautiful. There was a laundromat on site so I got to do a couple of loads of laundry and we also took advantage of having a restaurant on site and went there for dinner. Attached to the gift shop was a “Wildlife Gallery” which had numerous species of Yukon wildlife on display in their natural habitat with explanations/descriptions of their species and their role in the Yukon Territory. It was surprisingly informative. We got to learn about Arctic Fox, Muskox, Moose, Mule Deer, Wolves, Barren Ground Caribou, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Lynx… and a few more that I can’t remember! It was pretty cute though!
But the most memorable thing about this stay in Teslin was the BLEEPIN’ SKY!!! So sunset was officially at 11:20PM and sunrise the next morning was due at 4:26AM. As luck would have it, II was still awake after 11PM and noticed after the official sunset time how amazing (and light) the sky still was so I went outside to document what I was seeing at 11:31PM simply because…I just had to! Then I looked out again and HAD to brave the mosquitos and go back outside to take some more shots because…HELLLOOOOOO - the sun had reportedly “set” already but the sky was amazing! So the next pic below was taken at 11:43PM from our trailer door side (Karl’s side) looking out at the lake, and then I took one in front of the truck (which is the cover photo for this post) also at 11:43PM… Take that in for a moment folks - 11:43 AT NIGHT!!!! I then took a video of myself turning around in a cirlce to take it all in because it wasn’t like there was just a little light or a little color in one portion of the sky - it was everywhere! I’ve included that video at the bottom of this post. If you can turn your volume up you will hear me documenting the time. But it doesn’t matter if you can hear me or not - just know that it was ELEVEN FORTY THREE AT NIGHT!!!!
Then to put an exclamation point on the whole sky experience, Karl happened to wake up at 4:24AM and had this last view from his window - so he took a pic of the sunrise (which actually happened “officially” 2 minutes later at 4:26AM). How bleepin’ amazing and mind boggling is THAT??!!! For the record, I was asleep for the sunrise pic but was beyond thrilled with his brilliance to capture it!
